## How the Old English A is built

The Fraktur capital A barely resembles a modern A. There is no pointed apex: it is closer to a rounded U with a thick left stem and a hooked top, so first-time readers often misread it. The lowercase a is a compact two-storey shape squeezed into a box of broken strokes.

## Easily confused with

Capital A and capital U are the classic mix-up. Look at the top left: A curls back into a hook, while U stays open. In Bold Fraktur the difference is clearer because the A's crossing stroke is heavier.

## Where people use it

A is the most searched Old English letter, mostly for initials and the first letter of names such as Alexander or Angel. As a single-letter tattoo, the bold capital reads best at around 3 cm tall or larger.
