How underline works without formatting
Most apps don't let you underline text directly. The trick is the 'combining low line' character (U+0332), which the renderer draws underneath the previous letter. Stack two of them for a double underline. For a line through your text instead, see the strikethrough generator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the underline copy as a real underline in Word or Google Docs?
No — it pastes as the combining characters. To get a real underline in a word processor, use the app's underline button instead.
Why does the underline sometimes look broken between letters?
Each character has its own underline mark, so spacing between glyphs leaves tiny gaps. It's a Unicode limitation, not a bug in the generator.
